The series of C P I N industrial workers has been revised with base 1982 = 100 from October, 1988. The series is based on consumer expenditure data collected under the Working class Family income and Expenditure Survey conducted during 1981-82 at 76 important industrial centers in the country. (Indices of 70 centers are used for compiling All India Index) The Consumer survey data used for preparing the weighting diagram for preparation of the Index numbers. The indices have been compiled on the bases of the recommendation of the Rath committee and Seal Committee (1978).
The CPI for industrial workers with Base 1982 = 100 covers more numbers of centers, sectors of employment markets and items. In the new series 70 centers have been covered as against 50 centers in 1960 = 100 series. In the new series seven sectors of employment viz. factories, mines., plantation, railways, motor transport undertakings, electricity generating and distributing establishments and ports and docs have been covered in new series 226 markets and 260 items have been covered . out of 70 centers 5 centers viz. Ahmedabad, Bhavnagtar, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat are located in Gujarat.
